The SANDAG MTS South Bay Bus Maintenance Facility Expansion is a 65,000-square-foot design-build project located on a 10.6-acre operational transit site in Chula Vista, California. The project significantly expanded and modernized the existing maintenance and operations hub to support a growing bus fleet and improve overall service efficiency for the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS).
The scope included the demolition of seven outdated structures and the construction of several new facilities: a 50,000-square-foot high-bay bus maintenance building, a 12,000-square-foot operations and administration building, and a new bus wash building equipped with a reclaimed water system. The project also included renovations to an existing maintenance building, installation of a new fire alarm system in Building 3620, site utility upgrades, two emergency power generators, and new paved parking areas capable of accommodating 240 buses and 18 vehicles.
With expanded capacity and streamlined functionality, the facility increased its bus service capabilities from 174 to 240 buses, significantly enhancing regional transit operations. The project achieved LEED® Silver Certification, incorporating natural daylighting, photovoltaic power generation, and a high-performance building envelope while meeting local environmental and water discharge standards.
This strategic expansion reflects MTS and SANDAG’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure, enhanced public transportation, and the long-term needs of the South Bay community.
