Project Description

The César E. Chávez Campus of the San Diego Community College District is a landmark project located in the heart of Barrio Logan, designed to deliver accessible, high-quality continuing education to the surrounding community. This transformative development features a 67,924-square-foot, three-story instructional building and a 70,000-square-foot, five-level above-grade parking structure, with additional underground parking for 149 vehicles and a detached garage offering 320 more spaces.

The campus serves as a hub for vocational training, ESL, Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED preparation, and Emeritus (55+) programs, as well as Parent Education and Small Business Management offerings. It includes 22 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, student gathering areas, and thoughtful amenities like bicycle storage, changing rooms, and seamless public transit access.

Built in a distinct Latino architectural style, the design draws from the rich cultural identity of Barrio Logan, inspired by the nearby Chicano Park murals and San Diego's Coronado Bay Bridge. The campus reflects the values of empowerment, community, and education, aligned with the legacy of César E. Chávez.

Baker provided full electrical systems for the project, including power, lighting, fire alarm, intrusion control, and area of refuge infrastructure. The facility incorporates numerous sustainable features with the goal of LEED Silver certification, including rooftop solar panels, drought-tolerant landscaping, and high-efficiency water fixtures that reduce consumption by over 40 percent.
