Great infrastructure projects depend on more than technical expertise. They require strong communication, collaboration, and teams that can solve challenges together while keeping safety, quality, and the traveling public at the center of every decision.

Baker Electric’s Transportation Group recently demonstrated exactly that.

The team has earned a Caltrans 2026 Success in Motion Gold Award for its work on the SR-78 SHOPP Asset Management Project, recognizing the outstanding partnership and collaborative effort behind this important North County San Diego transportation project.

Rout-78

Modernizing a Critical North County Corridor

State Route 78 connects communities, businesses and commuters across North County San Diego, making the reliability and performance of its transportation infrastructure essential to the region.

Baker Electric is helping modernize the corridor through the installation and integration of advanced electrical and transportation technology systems.

Baker’s work includes:

  • Approximately 46,000 feet of microduct supporting high-speed fiber optic infrastructure

  • CCTV traffic-monitoring cameras

  • Census counters and vehicle detection systems

  • Loop detection systems

  • Ramp metering upgrades

  • Highway advisory systems

  • Traffic signal improvements

  • Safety and roadway lighting

  • Supporting electrical and underground infrastructure

Together, these systems help provide the technology foundation needed to monitor traffic conditions, manage roadway flow, and improve communication across the corridor.

More Than Technical Execution

Working on an active highway brings a unique set of challenges.

Crews must coordinate around live traffic, restricted access, nighttime work, changing site conditions, and multiple project stakeholders. Successful delivery depends on detailed planning and the ability to address issues quickly without compromising safety or quality.

That is what makes this Gold Award especially meaningful.

The recognition reflects not only what the team is building, but how the project is being delivered through communication, coordination, accountability, and a shared focus on results.

Collaboration That Keeps Projects Moving

Caltrans Gold recognition represents the highest level of achievement within the award program and celebrates project teams that demonstrate successful partnering and collaborative project delivery.

For the Baker Transportation team, those principles are part of the day-to-day work on SR-78.

Strong partnerships help resolve challenges earlier, maintain alignment around project priorities and keep complex transportation work moving forward.

The result is better coordination for the project team and better infrastructure for the communities that depend on it.

Building the Infrastructure Behind Smarter Transportation

Transportation infrastructure is becoming increasingly connected.

Modern highways rely on fiber communications, traffic monitoring, detection systems, signals and real-time information to help agencies better understand and manage roadway conditions.

Baker’s Transportation Group brings together the electrical construction and specialized systems expertise required to build and support that infrastructure.

The SR-78 project demonstrates those capabilities at scale while reinforcing Baker’s continued growth in transportation and public infrastructure.

Recognition That Belongs to the Team

Awards are important, but they are ultimately a reflection of the people doing the work.

From field crews and project leadership to coordination and support teams, the SR-78 Gold Award recognizes the commitment behind the project.

Congratulations to everyone involved in helping deliver this important infrastructure for North County San Diego.

Strong partnerships. Smart infrastructure. Exceptional execution.
