The Mesa Commons at Mesa Community College is a 73,000-square-foot, $44.3 million facility designed to serve as the central hub for student life, learning, and sustainability. Strategically located as a campus gateway, this two-story facility consolidates essential amenities and academic functions into a vibrant, flexible, and environmentally conscious space.
The building includes two cafeterias, a student-run M Fusion Dining Café, a campus bookstore, convenience store, coffee café, culinary arts management labs and classrooms, as well as student and faculty lounges, conference rooms, and services such as mail, printing, and the campus stockroom. Designed for interaction, flexibility, and convenience, the Commons fosters community connection and supports daily campus life.
Sustainability is a defining element of the project. Mesa Commons is the first building on campus to use cisterns for collecting HVAC condensate and rainwater, providing 100% of the site’s irrigation needs. A second-floor organic roof garden, irrigated with reclaimed water, supplies produce for the culinary program. The building also features multiple solar chimneys, radiant floor heating/cooling, and a solar thermal array generating approximately 630 million BTUs of clean energy annually—offsetting nearly 7% of total energy use.
