Project Description

The College Square Renovation project revitalized a 19,000-square-foot, two-story steel-framed and stucco building located at College Avenue and Paseo, near San Diego State University (SDSU). Originally constructed in the 1980s and owned by Aztec Shops, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation to resolve significant structural issues and modernize all building systems.

Completed in January 2016 at a cost of approximately $3.5 million, the renovation included structural upgrades, new finishes, and full modernization of the building’s plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and fire protection systems to meet updated codes. Most of the building has been converted into classroom space for SDSU’s College of Extended Studies, while also accommodating two commercial tenants: iGeek, an Apple product repair shop, and a remodeled Starbucks café, now featuring expanded space, a new dry storage room, and an outdoor patio.

Jointly funded by the College of Extended Studies and Aztec Shops, this project enhances the academic and community experience while giving new life to a previously underutilized campus facility.
